Say it Ain't So, Jimmy...

Somehow, I should have figured it would come to this. Jim Edmonds, former St. Louis Cardinal and all-around gamer, was placed on waivers by the San Diego Padres last week and now, the word is that the Cardinals' biggest rival is interested:

(Chicago Cubs) general manager Jim Hendry could not comment, but sources in the Cubs organization insist he will jump at the chance to sign Edmonds if he's available.

Look, I know that ballplayers (and all professional athletes, for that matter) have to "make a living" and find it hard to stop playing at the end of their careers. But the Cubs? Really? This isn't like Johnny Damon diving off of the Green Monster into a giant pile of Yankee money; this is a former All Star and bazillion-time Gold Glove winner at the end of his career catching on with the biggest rival of the the Cardinals, the team he has played the most with in his career. I hate that he's gotten older and has had several injuries over the last couple of years, but at some point, don't you just have to hang it up before you sign on with the Cubs?

Cubs Interested in Edmonds?
